L’associazione Surfrider Foundation, attiva in 13 paesi europei, è nel 2015 coordinatore nazionale per 4 Paesi (Cipro, Malta, Francia e Paesi Baschi) in ambito Let’s Clean Up Europe. Il che concretamente significa che qualsiasi cittadino, impresa, associazione, scuola, pubblica amministrazione, o chiunque altro desideri realizzare un’azione di pulizia del territorio in uno di questi 4 Paesi potrà fare riferimento a loro.
Ad ogni modo, le attività portate avanti da Surfrider Foundation in ambito di sensibilizzazione sulla problematica dei rifiuti, in particolare dei rifiuti marini e di mobilitazione cittadina sono numerose e trovano il loro culmine nelle Iniziative Oceaniche, iniziativa per la salvaguardia dei litorali che celebra il suo ventennale fra pochi giorni.
Lanciata nel 1995, quest’iniziativa si pone come obiettivo quello di accrescere la consapevolezza in merito alla quantità di rifiuti prodotti in ogni centro abitato e alle conseguenze che essi generano negli ambienti marittimi. I risultati dell’edizione 2014, contenuti in un report esaustivo (con tanto di top 10 dei rifiuti trovati e suddivisione dei risultati per ognuno dei litorali puliti) indicano la partecipazione di oltre 45.000 persone e una raccolta di un volume complessivo di rifiuti superiore ai 2800m3. Oltre 65.000 mozziconi di sigarette, 12.000 bottiglie e 11.000 lattine trovati.
Per celebrare il ventennale delle Iniziative Oceaniche, Surfrider Foundation invita tutti i cittadini a partecipare, nelle giornate fra il 19 e il 22 Marzo all’operazione di raccolta dei rifiuti su spiagge, laghi, fiumi e fondali marini. Sul sito, è possibile scegliere se partecipare a un’attività di raccolta o organizzarne una.
Le giornate di raccolta, tuttavia, siano esse quelle dell’ECUD o delle Ocean Initiatives non sono che uno strumento simbolico per far passare un messaggio e generare un processo di trasformazione delle abitudini di consumo, in modo da mostrare ad ognuno in quale misura ogni comunità/città produce rifiuti che si riversano sulle nostre meravigliose spiagge, far capire che non è mai troppo tardi per rimboccarsi le maniche e contribuire a ridurre i propri sprechi o ad acquistare in maniera consapevole per non appesantire ulteriormente il carico che grava sugli ecosistemi.

Surfrider Foundation’s initiatives against marine littering
Surfrider Foundation, an association which operates in 13 European countries, is the 2015 national coordinator for four countries (Cyprus, Malta, France and the Basque Country) within the Let’s Clean Up Europe activity. This means that any citizen, company, association, school, municipality, or anyone else who wishes to organize or engage in a cleaning action of the territory in one of these four countries will be able to refer to them.
However, the activities carried out by Surfrider Foundation in citizen mobilization and in awareness raising on the issue of waste – particularly of marine litter – are numerous and find their culmination in the Ocean Initiatives, an initiative aimed at protecting the coasts which celebrates its twentieth birthday in a few days.
Launched in 1995, this initiative aims to raise awareness about the amount of waste generated in each town and the consequences that this waste generates in maritime environments. The results of the 2014 edition, contained in a comprehensive report (including a top 10 of the types of waste found and a breakdown of results for each of the cleaned seas) indicate the participation of over 45,000 people and a collection of a total volume of waste than 2800m3 . Over 65,000 cigarette butts, 12,000 bottles and 11,000 cans have been collected.
To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Ocean Initiatives, Surfrider Foundation invites all citizens to participate, in the days between March 19th and 22nd to the waste collection on beaches, lakes, rivers and sea beds. On the website, you can choose to participate in an activity or to organize your own collection.
However, these cleaning up days, in addition to the results that they obviously offer in terms of waste collecton, are also a symbolic tool to pass a message and generate a process of change in consumer habits, in order to show everyone how each community / city produces waste that ends up on our beautiful beaches, to make it clear that it is never too late to take action, to help reduce waste or to stimulate participants to buy in a conscious way to avoid further complicating the load on ecosystems.
